Poverty in San Antonio: By the Numbers

An On-line Conversation with Steven Alexander, Harvard ’76, and consultant, Distressed Communities Index

While we already know that parts of San Antonio are poor, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Economic Innovation Group give us the numbers to understand that more precisely.  Based on a class project at the UTSA Master of Science in Data Analytics program, this webinar looks at data across America’s largest cities and in San Antonio over the past decade.  Avoiding mathematical and technical jargon, we’ll get a deeper look at life in our city.  We’ll also look behind the curtain at some of the techniques data scientists use to uncover insights about our world.

About Steven Alexander: Harvard Class of 1976, Steven Alexander recently returned to his math-major roots with a data science degree from UTSA.  The City of San Antonio approached his cohort for help with the Distressed Communities Index, a nationwide analysis of poverty.  Moved by his wife’s stories of her Medicaid patients in South San Antonio, Steven has made a qualitative and quantitative study of poverty over the past few years.
