Exploring the Role of Slavery

in the Settlement of Texas

and in the Texas Revolution

An On-line Conversation with Sherry Kafka Wagner, Former Loeb Fellow, Harvard University

In 1829 Mexico abolished slavery, granting an exception for Texas until 1830 when the Mexican government made the importation of slaves illegal.  The issue of slavery played an important role in the Texas Revolution.  Bowie was a slave trader, Travis took an active role in efforts to return escaped slaves back into slavery, and Austin promoted slavery for economic benefit.  An important factor in the Texas fight for independence has been glossed over.

About Sherry Kafka Wagner: For more than thirty years, Ms. Wagner’s work has been the designing and delivery of experiences for people---experiences designed to communicate effectively to a diverse and wide audience.  With an emphasis on strategic planning, design and effective organization, she has collaborated on projects in visitor attractions (museums, aquariums, visitor centers) and urban design (with an emphasis on the design of parks, public spaces, museums, aquariums) as well as projects in architecture, education, publications and audio/visual media including film and television. She has a strong interest in creative development for children as well as for life-long learners.  Ms. Wagner has worked with many institutions, ranging from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of American History to the Children’s Creativity Center in San Francisco.  For Kuwait’s New Scientific Center, she developed its Discovery Center.
