Nicholas Kristof is renowned as the "reporter's reporter," having embarked on a remarkable career that spans four continents and over 150 countries. Beginning his journey by backpacking through Africa and Asia, he funded his adventures by writing articles. Along the way, he faced malaria, wars, warlords, and even survived a plane crash in Africa. Kristof's fearless reporting earned him two Pulitzer Prizes, notably for his coverage of Tiananmen Square and his advocacy against genocide in Darfur. Teaming up with his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, they became the first husband-wife duo to win a Pulitzer for journalism. Their collaborations extend to bestselling books like "Half the Sky" and "A Path Appears," which inspired PBS documentaries. Kristof's impactful storytelling has made him a moral compass in journalism, recognized for his deep empathy and unwavering commitment to human rights.
The Maverick Lecture is an event that honors the late Maury Maverick Jr., the legendary civil rights lawyer, former member of the Texas Legislature, Marine, and iconoclastic newspaper columnist. The lecture explores topics that defined Maverick's place in American civic discourse. These topics include threats to constitutional liberty, with particular emphasis on the First Amendment, issues of poverty and race, Western occupation of developing world countries, and the moral requirements of war. The Maverick Lecture is underwritten by the William and Salomé Scanlan Foundation.
